MAYWEATHER VS MCGREGOR GAMBLING GUIDE

It is now just over two weeks until one of the most anticipated bouts in combat sports history. In one corner you have the former golden boy of boxing, and in the other, today’s biggest Mixed Martial Arts superstar. Who wins? Read on…

Mayweather vs McGregor

Did we ever think in a million years that when the trash talk began surfacing that’s this bout would happen? Yes. We did. Why you ask? Well, when there is that much money on offer to both athletes then it’s impossible for either of them to walk away. You’ve seen the insults, the call-outs, the accusations, the social media banter but can you imagine the verbal assault that would hit whoever even thought about declining the agreement?

So let’s dive in to the facts. Olympic medallist Floyd Mayweather (49-0 with 26 KO’s) is one of the most technically gifted boxers to ever grace the ring but his last bout took place way back in Sept 2015, where the undisputed champion called it a day. Now 40 years of age (albeit a very young 40 years of age) the former champ hasn’t hidden the fact his hands are riddled with damage but will this matter against an opponent who has never had a professional boxing match? McGregor, who is 21-3 in his MMA career is a tiny bit taller, holds a reach that is a little longer but is considerably younger (just over 10years). Does he hold decent boxing skills? Of course he does. MMA athletes incorporate boxing into their daily routine and on top of his brief amateur boxing background McGregor will have racked up endless sparring sessions just like his opponent. Can he box? He knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds with foot movement and a perfectly timed strike, so the proof is in the pudding. Is he as good as Mayweather when it comes to boxing? No he isn’t, but the Irishman has already won the battle of the mind games, is healthier and is hungry. Not just for money either. There is nobody like Conor McGregor in the world right now and Mayweather has witnessed the frighteningly mega confident aura he exudes during the international media tour. This isn’t going to be a normal day at the office for Floyd.

We said Mayweather would pull-out with two weeks to go but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here and hope that when all is said and done, two modern day supreme athletes take this event seriously and we, as combat sports fans, get to witness one of the biggest spectacles our generation has ever seen – with minimum controversy (let’s be honest, there’s going to be some come fight night!).

Who wins then? ‘Money’ Mayweather has so much to lose here. He’s putting a perfect record on the line as well as his reputation and bragging rights. We aren’t sure why he actually agreed to it (obviously it’s the millions he’ll bank but you see where we are coming from) but it looks like it’s happening. He SHOULD win and he SHOULD win by a very safe points decision using his years of experience and superior ring craft. Not by KO. This however, is a boxing match with no takedowns if you get tired, no octagon walls to stop you from running away and less round time to sink in a submission. But you know what? We think the world of sport gets spun on its head come August 26th and we witness ‘Mystic Mac’ shocking the world one more time, probably by TKO in the earlier rounds.

WINNER: McGregor
METHOD: KO/TKO
